JH Speech & Drama

Drama focuses on the many aspects of theater including but not limited to: terminology/vocabulary, history, script and character analysis, various methods of acting techniques, improvisation, scene work, and the production process. Students are required to take part in the semester production and compete in the acting events at competition at least once per semester.

Speech focuses on elements of public speaking and does not touch on thetheater aspect of performance. The curriculum format utilizes college preparatory objectives. Students learn the basic speech format, methods of speech delivery, and various types of speeches. Extemporaneous speaking is the method of delivery most often used outside and inside of the classroom, so most speech assignments will use this format. Students are required to attend and compete at one speech tournament each semester.
